What is Endodontic treatment?

Endodontic treatment is any procedure that aims to either preserve the health of the dental pulp (commonly known as “the nerve”), or to remove it when it is irreversibly damaged (when it is inflamed and cannot repair itself, or has died). Common endodontic procedures include root canal treatment, root canal re-treatment as well as surgical procedures.

All of our dentists are trained in diagnosis and endodontic therapy, however, some teeth can be difficult to diagnose and treat in some cases. If no treatment is done, there is the risk that your tooth may flare up (pain and / or swelling may develop).

Further study into the discipline of endodontics allows for more challenging and complex cases to be performed to a high standard, and can include referrals for the following:

  • Difficulties in diagnosing pain coming from the teeth and related structures
  • Difficulties in achieving successful anaesthesia (numbing) of the tooth requiring treatment
  • Limited access (limited mouth opening or the tooth is far back in the mouth)
  • Excessive curves of the roots
  • Complex root canal anatomy
  • Access to the root canals needs to be made through existing crowns (caps) or bridges
  • Removal / bypassing of broken instruments
  • Removal of posts
  • Removal of some types of root filling materials (silver points, cements, Thermafil etc.)

How successful is the treatment?

Success rates of root treated teeth are known to be high. However, as with any medical or dental procedure there is no guarantee of 100% success. However, the equipment we use allows us to deliver the best possible treatment. All treatment is performed with state-of-the-art equipment (including use of a dental operating microscope) and contemporary Endodontic techniques to ensure that the success of your treatment is kept optimal.

The procedure

During your consultation, Dr Jose Eusebio will assess the tooth and take X-rays where necessary to gain a thorough insight into the condition of the pulp and will discuss his findings with you. He will then explain your treatment options and costings. If you have any questions, feel free to ask Dr Jose Eusebio or any member of our team.
